Les Essais Préliminaires des 24 heures du Mans furent instaurés par l’Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) en 1959 afin d’offrir aux concurrents la possibilité de tester leurs voitures et leurs pilotes sur le circuit manceau quelques semaines avant la course. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui aucun livre n’a été consacré à l’histoire de ces Essais Préliminaires. Ce premier volume couvre la période 1970-1974, riche de changements, tant sur le tracé (zone de Maison Blanche en 1972) que sur la réglementation (Sports 5 litres puis avènement des Prototypes 3 litres). La course des 3 ou 4 heures du Mans qui était organisée lors de ces week-ends des Essais est également traitée dans l’Ouvrage.

Michel Bollée est né au Mans, berceau de l’automobile. Passionné par les 24 Heures du Mans et l’histoire de la course automobile, il est l’auteur d’une vingtaine livres sur le sujet, avec notamment plusieurs ouvrages consacrés à Maserati.
The Preliminary Tests for the 24 Hours of Le Mans were introduced by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) in 1959 to give competitors the opportunity to test their cars and drivers on the Le Mans circuit a few weeks before the race. Until now, no book has been devoted to the history of these Essais Préliminaires. This first volume covers the period 1970-1974, a period rich in changes, both to the track (the Maison Blanche zone in 1972) and to the regulations (5-liter Sports then the advent of 3-liter Prototypes). The 3 or 4-hour Le Mans race, which was organized during these test weekends, is also covered in the book.

Michel Bollée was born in Le Mans, the cradle of the automobile. Passionate about the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the history of motor racing, he is the author of some twenty books on the subject, including several devoted to Maserati.
